In an effort to attain sustainability for food production, development of climate resilient crops are crucial. Thanks to EU Horizon 2020 for funding a project on Translating submergence tolerance from aquatic to land plant system under grant agreement no 795906.
The project provide insights about the molecular mechanisms of seaweeds for their survival and growth under extreme conditions of submergence and in salt water. Further, genome-wide orthologes were identified for different plant lineages revealing the gain-or loss-in-function. The identified seaweed genes were successfully transformed in Arabidopsis and the phenotypes recorded to strongly suggest the enhanced stress tolerance against complete submergence.
